Science Stuff: ChatGPT vs ACR Appropriateness Criteria
Experts recently tested these large language models (LLMs) with simulated patient scenarios—the likes of breast cancer screening and breast pain—to see how they would fare in real life. When matched against the ACR Appropriateness Criteria, ChatGPT performed admirably in both open-ended (OE) and select-all-that-apply (SATA) formats. As expected, with more training and a few tweaks here and there, ChatGPT may just find a place within the medical world.

Radiology experts stated that integrating an AI-based tool into clinical workflows could drastically improve efficiency. They pointed out that AI tools can take advantage of the vast information available from patient pretest odds, diagnostic likelihood ratios, and medical records. So, what exactly happened when both LLMs were tested? Here's a quick rundown of the scores:

- GPT-3.5 achieved an average SATA percentage correct of 88.9%, while GPT-4's average was 98.4%.
- Performance dipped slightly for breast pain prompts, but GPT-4 still outperformed GPT-3.5.
What's the Future Look Like for ChatGPT in Radiology?
The authors believe that their results support the promising role of LLMs as a valuable addition to radiologic decision-making. By designing hybrid prompts that give ChatGPT both options and the possibility to explain the rationale behind its choices, the accuracy of results could be improved.
